Description

CARBIDE TURNING INSERTS TNMG

TNMG carbide turning inserts are double-sided, negative-geometry triangular inserts with a 60° included angle and a 0° relief (clearance) angle. The “M” in TNMG designates a medium tolerance insert with a chipbreaker — making TNMG one of the most widely used geometries for medium to heavy turning operations.

These inserts offer high strength, wear resistance, and stable performance in demanding cutting environments. They are suitable for machining steel, stainless steel, and cast iron, providing a good balance between durability and cutting efficiency.

Made from cemented carbide (WC-Co) and typically CVD or PVD coated (TiN, TiCN, Al₂O₃, TiAlN), TNMG inserts deliver excellent wear resistance, thermal stability, and long tool life even at high cutting speeds.

Key Features

• Shape: Triangle (T) — 60° included angle
• Relief Angle: 0° (negative geometry)
• Cutting Edges: Double-sided — 6 cutting edges per insert
• Mounting Type: Clamp or screw-on (ISO standard holders, 60° pockets)
• Coatings: CVD or PVD — TiN, TiCN, Al₂O₃, TiAlN (depending on grade)
• Chipbreaker: Yes — “M” indicates a molded chipbreaker for improved chip control
• Application Type: Medium to heavy turning and general machining

Materials & Applications

TNMG carbide inserts are engineered for medium and heavy-duty cutting where stability, chip control, and edge life are critical. Their negative rake and chipbreaker geometry make them ideal for continuous or interrupted cuts at moderate-to-high cutting speeds.

Typical Workpiece Materials:

• Steel (carbon, alloy) — ideal for roughing and semi-finishing
• Stainless Steel — performs well with PVD-coated or sharp-edged grades
• Cast Iron — suitable for medium-duty cuts and stable setups

Common Operations:

• General turning (medium to roughing)
• Facing and profiling
• Continuous and interrupted cutting
• Medium-to-deep depth of cut with controlled chip formation

Advantages & Performance

• Excellent Chip Control: Integrated chipbreaker ensures efficient chip evacuation and prevents chip packing
• High Edge Strength: Negative geometry and thicker insert cross-section withstand heavy loads and vibration
• Extended Tool Life: CVD/PVD coatings protect against wear, oxidation, and crater damage
• Versatile: Works across a wide range of materials and cutting parameters
• Cost-Efficient: Double-sided design with 6 usable cutting edges reduces cost per part
